While Gopher Athletics has a strong collection of outstanding game day venues, our development facilities where student-athletes spend a majority of their time studying and practicing are outdated and overcrowded. Gopher Athletics has needed to modernize our development facilities for many years.
In addition, Gopher Athletics also has not had a competition-level, outdoor track in more than 15 years. Our track and field programs need an on-campus home to host regular season, conference and NCAA meets.
We are excited to address those facility needs and others for several of our Olympic sports programs through our Nothing Short of Greatness campaign, which will fund construction of the new Athletes Village and a new track and field facility for our current and future student-athletes, as well as some of these other projects. Private contributions are key to these projects, as Gopher Athletics will fund them entirely through donations and athletics revenue. These projects will not use any permanent funding from the University, nor Minnesota taxpayers.
Recent History
Our Nothing Short of Greatness campaign to revitalize many of our athletics facilities was publicly introduced during a University of Minnesota Board of Regents meeting in July 2013. Since that time, tireless behind-the-scenes work has advanced these ideas from initial concepts through Board approval and into construction of three new buildings.
Since construction of the Athletes Village began, the Board of Regents also approved the construction of a new outdoor track and field facility in October 2016. This project will bring a competition-level track back to the University’s East Bank campus.
Since these facilities will be paid for entirely by athletics revenue sources, our goal is to fund all of these projects though private contributions. Every contribution, regardless of size, brings us closer to achieving this goal.
To-date, our Nothing Short of Greatness campaign has made significant progress toward our campaign goal of raising $190 million for facility improvements. More than $120 million has been committed to the campaign, with more than $105 million donated specifically to the Athletes Village project, along with additional funding for other facility enhancement projects and the new track and field stadium.
Gopher student-athletes began using the Land O’Lakes Inc. Center for Excellence, the David and Janis Larson Football Performance Center, the Charlie and Kathy Cunningham Basketball Performance Center and the Indoor Practice Facility in January 2018.
We anticipate our student-athletes will have full use of the new track and field stadium by September 2018.
Future Phases
As progress continues on both the Athletes Village and the track and field stadium, the remainder of our Nothing Short of Greatness campaign focuses on other necessary and needed facilities projects. This includes construction of other new facilities, such as the John W. Mooty Golf Training Center, and reimaging and renovating existing spaces, such as the athletic department’s Bierman and Gibson-Nagurski buildings that house offices and training areas for dozens of Gopher teams and the an existing indoor practice field.
